Green Fest Notes

Sara and i tried to hustle hammocks at the Washington DC green festival.  This event held in the DC Convention Center which has a union contract for loading and unloading the space.  This pits exhibitors against union movers who are under contract with the hall for loading and unloading rates which are negotiated with the convention center.  Of course the greens shocked by the sticker price for getting their stuff in bitch about the unions, when the convention center is at least equally to blame.

So we paid our $70 fee for one trip of our little cart and in the 20 minutes we were there Sara had already developed a fan club from the union guys who were working the floor.  So cleverly, when we needed to go back and sneak a second load on our cart i thought i would leave Sara behind, because they would remember here and not remember me, so we could get the second trip unmonitored.

Within 60 seconds of leaving Sara at the booth, i was confronted by one of the floor workers who said “Where are you going with that cart?” But before i could answer he said “Are you with that young lady?” And i said “Yes”  And he replied “You are okay then.”  So much for being clever.  Sara was wearing a dress with a large Rosie the Riveter image on it front and back.

imagine this on a dress, imagine that dress on Sara

Alan is one of the principal organizer for Green Fest.  He helped us in several ways to get to the event.  And we chatted a couple of times over the course of the weekend.  Sara and i decided to wait for a couple hours after the event ended on Sunday to pack out and when we returned to the hall over 95% of the vendors were completely gone.  As we packed up our booth i spotted Alan packing up some tubing from one of the displays.

“Alan, do you know what the difference between a leader and an organizer is?”  i asked

“No.” he replied

“There is no job too low for an organizer.  And i am glad you are one”

“Thanks, Pax, you just made my day.”

Now! I need a Rosie the Riveter dress. Glad you were able to get another cart in free o charge, silly that they’d think they could charge you for pushing a cart.

Post another blog entry soon, Pax!

I want a Rosie dress too, especially for when I flirt with the unions.
